3.17 online communications/social media

In this unit I learned a great deal about email. There are so many verious ways to organize, send, and review email. I can access my email from anywhere in the world which is amazing. I also learned a lot about social bookmarking and social networking. Social networking can be very cool but it can also be dangerous. With good precautions, it is a very good way to get in contact with employers, friends, and family.

Words I didnt know:
1. POP3 server
2. watched conversation- To more easily identify all the messages in a conversation.
3.Listserv- A mailing list requires this special software.
4.digest format-Messages that are compiled as a single file.

2/15/2011 Understanding the internet post two

      This past unit I have learned a lot especially about security and internet issues. Being a girl, I do shop online frequently but I have learned to be more cautious about a lot of things while on the web. I learned to not give out my credit card number so often but to also take precautions when using it. I now look for security features on websites to make sure they are legit. In the past week I used a bit of information that was in one of the lectures. I was trying to figure out how to check my credit report and I remembered that the lecture told me a website to use to check it.
       I have learned to use security features more often. I use my antivirus software almost every day to make sure there are no threats. I learned the differences between WLAN and WPAN.
      For this past unit I feel that it is very time consuming and confusing. I also take another online class for english which is somewhat easier.

Words I learned:
FTP or File transfer Protocol
MAN- This connects clients to a larger region rather than an office or building.
MAC address- This is a unique physical address.
Data Switch- This interprets MAC addresses and filters and forwards packets to other network segmants.

This first section has been very informative and have learned quite a few things. I have learned a few things on accessing information and also sharing my own thoughts and information with others.

Four words I didnt know prior to this section were protocol and also the TCP/IP. A few others were microblogging and XHTML. I did know the basics to blogging but did not know that microblogging was when you send texts to keep subscribers interested and keep them updated. There are just so many ways to communicate other then the normal Facebook or standard blogging.
